IMEG is providing engineering design services for multiple projects at the SwedishAmerican Medical Center in Rockford, Ill., including a new four-story bed tower, new cath lab addition, and various department renovations.

Engineers are providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology design, as well as construction administration services for the project, which includes:

The design includes an air handling unit on each floor to add redundancy and limit duct sizes; replacing two existing chillers and cooling towers in the existing central plant with larger units to handle the additional load; adding a fourth generator to the existing paralleling system to serve the added emergency power equipment; and new, stand-alone boilers for the women’s and children’s tower.

The project is designed to IECC 2015, and its sustainability features include LED lighting and high-efficiency chillers. The facility is expected to receive ComED New Construction Program Rebates.

Many of the site utilities, including the electrical distribution equipment that serves the existing heart hospital and patient bed tower, had to be relocated. IMEG worked closely with the owner to review the existing power distribution system to identify tie-in points, keeping these buildings operating with limited downtime. Engineers also provided detailed field work to validate various temporary connection options to limit downtime.
