IMEG’s design of the 651 Gateway renovation in South San Francisco, CA, has been selected as a finalist for the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA)’s 2024 Structural Engineering Excellence (SEE) Awards in the Retrofit/Alteration category. One finalist in each category will be named an “Outstanding Structure” this fall.

IMEG’s San Francisco structural team collaborated with Maffei Structural Engineering to provide a full-scale seismic retrofit, as well as architectural and MEP renovations, for 651 Gateway Boulevard in South San Francisco, California. The existing 17-story steel-framed office building was renovated into a life science laboratory.

The adaptive re-use of 651 Gateway provides a benchmark of success in the Bay Area’s efforts to revitalize buildings and cities without short-changing the need to improve seismic safety, recoverability, and resilience. The use of performance-based design, nonlinear response-history analysis (NLRHA), and innovative engineering solutions and details help make such renovation and re-use projects efficient, affordable, and environmentally sustainable.
