The project: New Science & Innovation Center to house multiple laboratories, the University’s School of Nursing, and research space for the DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science

Project amenities: The Center features a variety of classrooms, labs, simulation areas, and exam rooms. All amenities are connected by a four-story internal staircase along the west side of the building. Nursing-specific areas include a full surgical simulation wing with two operating room lab spaces optimized for cardiac profusion and anesthesia, plus a clinical skills and patient care lab.

The new engineering space consists of an expansion to the University’s Big Data Lab, a large maker space to facilitate student prototyping, an intelligent systems cognitions/robotics lab, bioengineering lab, tissue culture facility, and an industrial engineering manufacturing lab.

Design approach: All inclusive engineering services were provided by the IMEG team for the new Center. This included both new and relocation of existing utilities including temporary facilities during construction.

Challenge: The Center is located on the University’s East Campus adjacent to the Frank G. Zarb School of Business building. The University completed a full environmental review, including a traffic study, for the building. The Town of Hempstead reviewed and approved the final environment report and site plan. An existing 7,200-sf campus building known as the Career Center was demolished to accommodate construction of the Center.

Project outcome: IMEG’s MEP, structural, and civil engineering team was involved with the project from programming through close out. The team provided expertise in laboratory design, sustainability efforts, and site development to the project.
